Glossary of Learning Terms > T > Task Analysis

A process by which an instructional designer identifies the specific tasks necessary to perform a skill or build knowledge and undertakes detailed analysis of each task. It also identifies such things as task frequency, task allocation, task complexity, environmental conditions, necessary clothing and equipment, and unique factors involved or required to perform a given task. Task analysis information is used as the foundation for developing instructional objectives, identifying and selecting appropriate instructional strategies, sequencing instructional content, identifying and selecting appropriate instructional media, and designing performance evaluation tools. It is always performed in the context of a specific job. See also Front End Analysis (FEA), Job Analysis, Analysis, Learning Objective.
